How to Activate Maltego 3 with a License Key
Maltego 3 is a powerful tool for conducting open source intelligence (OSINT) and cyber investigations. It allows you to access and analyze data from various sources, visualize connections and patterns, and collaborate with other analysts. But before you can use Maltego 3, you need to activate it with a valid license key.
In this article, we will show you how to activate Maltego 3 with a license key in two ways: online and offline. We will also explain the difference between user and machine licenses, and how to change your license type if needed.
Online Activation
The online activation method is the recommended way to activate your Maltego 3 client and should be a quick and easy process. To activate Maltego 3 online, follow these steps:
When opening Maltego 3 for the first time, you will be presented with a window allowing you to choose how you want to use Maltego. All editions of Maltego (Maltego One, XL, Classic, CE, and Casefile) run from the same installation, and this initial selection allows you to select which license type you will be using. The version of Maltego selected can be changed at any time.
Click Activate with Key for either Maltego One, Classic or XL to start the online activation wizard.
When prompted, enter the 26-digit license key that you purchased[^1^].
From version 4.1.15 onward, the default option is User License. A user license allows you to activate Maltego on up to two devices using your email address and password. A machine license allows you to activate Maltego on one device using a machine ID. You can choose which option suits you best by clicking on Advanced Option[^1^].
After entering your license key and choosing your license option, click Next. The client will check whether the license key entered is valid. Should the license be valid, the product will be activated and the following screen will be displayed:
Offline Activation
In the case where your Maltego 3 client is operating in an offline environment, you are able to perform an offline activation. To activate Maltego 3 offline, follow these steps:

The website will generate an activation response file that contains information about your license validity and expiration date.
Copy the activation response file back to your offline device and click Browse in the client. Select the file and click Next.
The client will verify the activation response file and activate your product if it is valid.
