Bodegas Ontanon is a 5th generation family-owned and run winery in Rioja Baja (now Rioja 'Oriental'). Here Raquel, Ruven and Maria Perez Cuevas continue their father Gabriel's work to develop Bodegas Ontanon into one of the most highly-regarded wineries in Rioja. Ontanon have vast swathes of vineyard in this part of Rioja. Whilst wine production in the region is typically very dependent on contracts with grape growers, the Perez Cuevas family have seen fit to invest heavily in the purchase of their own land and vines. Their 250ha is a testament to the importance they place on controlling grape quality. Their vineyards sit high in the Sierra Yerga mountains in the prestigious region surrounding Quel - and defy misconceptions that Rioja Baja is one of the lesser sub-regions within Rioja. Much of their vineyards are actually planted at altitudes on a par with, or above, those in Rioja Alta and Alavesa; (La Pasada is their highest vineyard at 800m above sea level planted in 1979 it is used for Reserva and Gran Reserva wines). The hot and dry Mediterranean climate allows for consistent ripening of the grapes with little disease this has enabled them to pursue organic production across 57 hectares.

In 1991 , this family ventured to a new world: a sea-facing hillside in the Napa Valley, with rocky soils and a favorable coastal climate. Artesa's architecturally-acclaimed facility opened then, named as Codorniu Napa, and dedicated solely to méthode champenoise sparkling wine production.

The arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversión shifted their focus dramatically in 1997. The winery reopened in 1999 with the inaugural release of ultra-premium, estate grown, artesan still wines.

While Artesa is a relative newcomer to Napa, it has received a rich heritage of five centuries of history with 15 generations of a remarkable winemaking family, which are put now at the service of their mission: crafting distinctive wines and sharing them with joy.

Club Artesa offers exclusive savings on purchases, unique experiences, private tasting areas and first access to new releases and limited edition wines. Members can choose between four different club selections of five shipments a year and the option to customize each one.

889 cases, $50. WinemakerDave Dobson crafted this wine but he has recently departed and has been replaced by MarkBeringer, formerly of Duckhorn. This wine is composed of the most outstanding barrels in thecellar and generally needs time to shed its tannins. Deep dark reddish-purple color.Appealing aromas of plums, currents and spice. Plush core of earth-kissed dark fruits andsassafras with exotic spices. Less tannic than the 2006 version of this wine with a little morelively acidity.Reviewed April 18, 2009ARTICLE&nbsp

14.7% alc.,100-120 cases, price TBA. A highly structured wine withsubstantial tannins. Shy on the nose but powerful in the mouth with deep, rich darker fruits complimented bysmoky oak and an Oreo cookie taste. Still closed and brooding, this one will require at least 1 to 2 years in thecellar but will always be a muscular wine.Reviewed February 12, 2009ARTICLE&nbsp

13.9% alc., $25. A light and feminine Pinot Noir showing delicate cherryand strawberry aromas and flavors enhanced with spice and savory herbs. A simple but pleasing wine withcommendable balance. Perfectly fine with grilled salmon.Reviewed February 12, 2009ARTICLE&nbsp

14.5% alc., 800 cases, $50. Aged 10 months in Frenchoak barrels. Composed of the most outstanding barrels in the cellar. Darkest in color of all the wines tasted.A pinotypical nose of dark berry and cherry fruit with a sidecar of oak. Tasty blackberry and black raspberryfruit with an appealing earthiness and a hint of citrus peel tang on the persistent aromatic finish. A substantialwine that is still reticent and needs time to shed some of its soft, dry tannins. A year or two in the bottle willbenefit this wine. That said, I drank this wine at the winery with pan roasted wild sea bass with Meyer lemonbuerre blanc, quinoa pilaf and Sicilian spinach and the result was spectacular. The roasted fish tamed thetannins of the wine and the grippy acidity of the wine matched perfectly with the buerre blanc.Reviewed February 12, 2009ARTICLE&nbsp

If you ever find yourself in Napa, a visit to Artesa is not just recommended, it is essential. The winery grounds, sculpture gardens, architecture, and winery are magnificent. One has the feeling of visiting a world-class art museum, a winery and even a place of worship when spending time at Artesa.

The winery continues to grow and gain in prestige and honor for the next several decades. In 1989, they break ground on a revolutionary new winery in the Napa Valley. In 1991, Codorníu Napa opens as a méthode champenoise facility in the Carneros region of the Napa Valley. Those of you that know our tastes, know that The Wine Spies are enamored with the Carneros region.

Throughout his career, Mark has been recognized as a leader and a pioneer in the field of winemaking. He has received numerous kudos and awards, including Winemaker of the Year by The San Francisco Chronicle.

A bright Carneros Pinot Noir filled with aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry and red currant. This wine is beautifully subtle and multi-layered with hints of nutmeg, cinnamon, leather, cedar chest and smoke from a distant campfire. Combining both elegance and boldness, this wine is wonderful to drink now while it also has the concentration and complexity to age well for 5 years. Pair with braised beef, duck, goose, pheasant, lamb tangine, osso bucco, plank-roasted salmon, semi-soft, herbed and smoked cheeses.

Winemaking: Gently hand harvested, the grapes were destemmed without crushing. Our massive must chiller guarantees that our Pinot gets a slow cool start to its fermentation. Most lots were inoculated with one of several yeast strains; some lots went through uninoculated fermentations. A mixture of thorough punchdowns and gentle pumpovers gives color with texture. Pressed of shortly after dryness and aged in French oak barrels where the secondary malolactic fermentation occurs. Each barrel is tasted and selected for this reserve-tier wine to guarantee the greatest quality.

But in 1997, with the arrival of a world-class winemaker and a $10 million conversion, the winery shifted focus dramatically. Artesa was born with the inaugural release of ultra-premium still wines in September 1999.

In 2008, Mark founded Mark Beringer Consulting, working on a variety of projects within the wine industry before joining Artesa Vineyards and Winery as Vice President of Production and Winemaking in February, 2009.

Ana Diogo-Draper is the winemaker. Born, raised, and educated in Portugal, including a BA in agricultural engineering from the University of Évora, she is fluent in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French and has more than 15 harvest under her belt. Diogo-Draper became assistant winemaker in 2013 and director of winemaking in 2015. She specializes in small lot winemaking and champions responsible, sustainable land management. All Artesa estate vineyards are Green Land Certified by the Napa Valley Vintners Association; all grapes are farmed and harvested by hand. Cover crops prevent soil erosion and create a natural environment for predatory insects, reducing the need for insecticides.

ARTESA Winery blends the senses together in a sophisticated, elegant, relaxing, and comfortable manner. Whether you choose to sit inside and enjoy the view through the expansive windows, or outside on the patio, feeling the breeze and listening to the sounds of nature as you indulge in the wine tasting experience-THIS is a winery that is simply: Unique. 041b061a72
